This black & white photo is of Steve in his pit getting his broken foot wrapped. Steve broke his left foot in a motorcycle race in California prior to the Sebring event. The cast that was originally on his foot couldn't withstand the temperatures in the car so his crew constantly fiddled with make shift casts made out of leather and metal. They even tried wrapping his cast in asbestos cloth to minimize heat transfer to his foot and painted the cast black to make it less obvious. When you consider that he was in constant pain during the race it is quite an accomplishment that he was able to do as much driving as he did and with the great help of his co-driver, Peter Revson, they finished second in what some sports writers at the time said was the greatest Sebring race ever.
