Ascot Speedway was an historic Southern California landmark, home to decades of memorable
sprint car races. This half-mile dirt oval was owned by the legendary Agajanian family, who fielded numerous
Indy 500 efforts, winning the race in 1963 with Parnelli Jones. McQueen raced his Chevy-powered Jeepster there
several times during the summer of 1969, as it was close to home, and he liked the casual nature of this
grassroots form of motorsport. And, as this photo shows, he won often. Photo from the Motor Trend magazine archive.
