| Steve got his first acting job in a Jewish repertory company doing
a play called Molly Picon on Second Ave. He had three lines of dialogue. He would come out on stage with a grim look on his face and say "nothing will help" in Yiddish. He was paid 40 dollars a week. Steve told writer William Nolan, "My roomate, a logger, helped me land the part. His sister was an actress and she talked them into hiring me. But I got fired after just four performances!" As per the reason behind his early departure from the show, he jokingly observed, "I guess it was my lousy Yiddish". |
